Possible Village Noticeboard

Testing interest in a cautious, community-recommended local services list.

Would a village noticeboard be useful?

We are not promising to launch one yet. This page is just to measure interest and collect suggested categories, vendors and local service providers that villagers already recommend.

What we are exploring

Several village websites include practical local information. Alkham.org may eventually include a simple noticeboard or services directory where residents can find locally recommended people or businesses, such as gardeners, reflexology therapists, landscapers, handymen, tutors, cleaners, electricians, plumbers, dog walkers, carers or other useful local services.

The possible idea is simple: if three or more villagers independently recommend the same vendor, the comms technology group may consider listing them with the number of village “thumbs up” recommendations received.

Important: this would not be a formal endorsement, guarantee, vetting system or paid advertising scheme. It would simply show that several villagers have suggested the same person or business.

Suggested cautious principles

  • No vendor is listed automatically.
  • We would look for repeated village recommendations, not one-off promotion.
  • A web address or email would be used as a practical unique identifier where possible.
  • We would avoid publishing private personal contact details without consent.
  • Listings could show category, name, website/email, general area served and number of village recommendations.
  • Any future noticeboard would need a clear disclaimer and a simple correction/removal process.

Current comms technology group

The current working group includes Harlan Webber (Alkham Valley Society), Kev Rolfe (AVH Chair), Trevor Johns (APC), Brian Wimsett (Newsletter), and Dave Horne (Trustee AVH). We would also welcome interest from other residents who may wish to help with community communication, village archives, website content, accessibility, local history or practical digital support.

Suggest a vendor or local service provider

Use this section if there is someone you would personally recommend. A website URL or email address helps us avoid double-counting the same business under slightly different names.
